Unequally Yoked

Yesterday I left a post on how a lot of folks bring fantastic doctrines my way and expect me to believe them, even though they have no scriptural foundation or confirmation. Today I just want to touch on one that seemingly almost everyone believes. In Genesis 6 we are told that before the flood the “sons of God” saw the beauty of the “daughters of men,” and also that they married them and produced great men of renown. We also see in this chapter that this led to more wickedness in the earth, prompting God to destroy everyone in the earth except for Noah and his family. Now somewhere along the line someone decided that this was speaking of fallen angels marrying women, and that these undue relationships were the reason for giants and men of renown being produced. Well I agree that these marriages were illicit before God, and also that they produced these great men of renown. But there is no scriptural or practical evidence for believing that fallen angels married women. Fallen angels are what we know as demons, and they are spiritual beings, not able to engage in any such act, meaning sexual intercourse. Demons, like angels, are spirits; and are of spiritual substance, not fleshly substance (Heb. 1:13,14). Jesus made it abundantly clear that angels are not capable of marriage, which in biblical terminology is sexual intercourse (Mat. 22:30; I Cor. 1:7). I know that angels are referred to as “the sons of God” in the book of Job, but Adam is also referred to as “the son of God” in the genealogy listed in Luke 3. Also in that genealogy Seth is named as the son of Adam. What this means is that the seed of Seth were the sons of God, while the seed of Cain were the sons, or daughters in this case, of men. The seed of Seth marrying the daughters of Cain is what displeased God, and led to the furthering of wickedness in the earth, and the wrath of God by means of the great flood. And it was the seed of Cain, and those who intermingled with them, that God destroyed with the flood, not fallen angels. This selling out to the flesh by God’s people is also what produced the great men of renown. When wickedness increases, the flesh is always magnified, and this magnification often produces great things in the flesh. There’s no doubt that wickedness will increase when the only people in the earth who are standing against it, begin selling out to wickedness by marrying into it.

This kind of misunderstanding of scriptural truth is exactly what was named in yesterday’s post as being a distraction from the real point of the Gospel, which is true holiness in the lives of God’s people. The way this doctrine distracts from the truth is that it provides a decoy and a cover for one of the great sins of the Bible, which is God’s people marrying apart from the one faith. This sin has been warned against and hotly condemned by God throughout the scriptures, and has bedeviled God’s people throughout history (Num. 25:1-5; Deut. 7:1-4;Ezra 10-1-3; Neh. 13:23-27; I Cor. 7:39,40; II Cor. 6:14-16). If we believe that it was fallen angels that married the daughters of men, then we totally miss the point of the severity and jeopardy of God’s people marrying apart from the faith of Christ. The scripture plainly tells us that “by one spirit are we all baptized into one body" (I Cor.12:13). If we have been baptized by God’s Spirit into the one body of Christ, and marry apart from that body [i.e. to someone who has not been baptized with the holy Ghost]; we are guilty of the very same thing that the seed of Seth was guilty of in Gen.6, and have displeased God by being "unequally yoked,” or joined together with someone wrongfully in marriage. And friend, God doesn’t feel any differently about the breaking of this commandment than he has every felt throughout history [reference the scriptures listed above]. This sin has been hidden and promoted by the false new birth doctrines of modern Christianity which provide biblically unsupported methods for being born again apart from or before our “being baptized by one Spirit into one body” [i.e. “getting saved,” “accepting the Lord,” “confessing Jesus with your mouth,” “praying the sinners prayer,” “joining the church,” etc.]. My friend, if you have been baptized with God’s blessed Spirit with the sign of speaking with other tongues, please do not marry someone who does not share that same experience! It can only lead to trouble and to you being turned away from the path of holiness that you were called to, and must remain on in order to be saved (Mat. 24:12,13; Heb. 12:14). Amen.
