The Word of God Is…

Today I would like to take a look at how the Bible defines the word of God, and what the BIBLE says it takes to attain unto that word. “So that thou incline thine EAR unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his MOUTH cometh knowledge and understanding” (Prov. 2:2-6). We should note the words ‘ear’ and 'mouth’ in verses two and six respectively. The 'ear’ part pertains to the believer, and the 'mouth’ part pertains to God. The point? It’s simple really: According to the Bible, the word of God is what comes out of God’s mouth. In fact there is NOWHERE in the Bible where it says that the scriptures are the word of God. And we should also note that between verses two and six, there is a whole lot said about diligently seeking GOD in prayer and study, not to mention in the doing of righteousness. This passage makes it very clear that if we expect to attain unto hearing and receiving God’s word, we are going to have to seek for it the way people seek and search after the most precious and valuable gems in the earth. The religious myth that the Bible is the word of God was in fact born of a complacent, slothful spirit that DOES NOT WANT God’s people seeking God with the kind of diligence and perseverance needed to truly lay hold on his word of truth. But it was not complacency and worldly comfort that qualified God’s prophets of old to declare; “Then the word of the LORD came unto me, SAYING” (Jer. 13:8; etc; etc.). And again we see that the word of God is something that must COME TO someone, FROM God’s mouth. Jesus made this point with crystal clarity when he waged war with Satan in the wilderness, quoting from the scriptures: “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Mat. 4:4).

The truth is, the word of God cannot be read, and it cannot be written, and to this the scriptures agree as well: “For the word of God is quick [ALIVE], and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Heb. 4:12). Yes my friend, the word of God is indeed alive and powerful, for in reality it is that which The SPIRIT of God SAYS; and the Spirit of God is both life AND power (Jn. 6:63; Rom. 8:2,10; II Cor. 3:6; Acts 1:8; Rom. 15:19; II Tim. 1:7). This is exactly what Jesus said repeatedly in his messages to the seven messengers of the congregations in Asia: “He that hath an EAR, let him HEAR what the Spirit SAITH unto the [congregations]” (Rev. 2:7; etc.). We know that Jesus himself “is called the Word of God,” and the scripture also says that “the Lord IS that Spirit” (Rev. 19:13; II Cor. 3:17). So that finishes this discussion of truth in the same place where we started it in the Bible, with the word of God being what true believers HEAR, that God is SAYING to them. As long as God’s people call the Bible the word of God, private interpretation of the scriptures will continue to divide and weaken the body of Christ, as it is this day. And God’s people will continue to rely on someone else to deliver the supposed word of God to them, when in fact it is of necessity that ALL of God’s people are able to discern the word of God for themselves (Isa. 54:13; Jer. 31:34; Jn. 14:26; I Jn. 2:27). The scriptures are an inspired record of how the word of God has come to God’s people, and of God’s dealings with his people. The scriptures are infallible, and they will ALWAYS confirm ANY word from God that comes to anyone (II Tim. 3:16). The word of the Lord is our meat my friends, but as it is ordained in the natural realm, so also it is in the spiritual realm: “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat” (II Thess. 3:10). And to this Jesus surely agreed: “Labour not for the meat which perisheth , BUT FOR that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you” (Jn. 6:27). Amen.
