Birds of a Feather

“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise, but a companion of fools shall be destroyed”(Prov. 13:20). If you think you can voluntarily keep regular company with people who are not following hard after the Spirit of God, and continue to prosper spiritually, you are fooling yourself. If you are communicating with people according to the terms set forth by the mind and spirit of this world, then two things are going on: One is you aren’t suffering persecution, because you're catering to the spirits of men, rather than reproving them by staying in line with God’s Spirit (II Tim. 3:12). The other is that you are being drained of the life that you’ve received through God’s Spirit, or keeping yourself from receiving it if you do not yet have it. Let’s not forget the simplistic admonition of the apostle Paul: “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners" (I Cor. 15:33). Nobody can hang with anyone for very long, until someone becomes like someone else in the equation. Otherwise they part company. It’s just a simple principle that really has never been broken. Birds of a feather do in fact flock together. What about you my friend? What is the feather that you are flocking to? And is that feather bringing you more faith, and love, and peace, and joy, and comfort in God’s Spirit? If not, then you should take inventory of your associations, and flock fully to the Lord, and to those who are prospering in his love and joy. And in conclusion let us consider this sobering admonition from James the brother of Jesus: ”… know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God (Jas. 4:4).
