When God Became a Father

It seems appropriate on this father's day to write something about the truth and reality of when God became a father. So then, just when DID God become a father? Let's look at what the Bible tells us on the matter. In Colossians 1:15,17, the scripture says that Christ is "the FIRSTBORN of every creature," and that he was "BEFORE all things." And that runs true with what Jesus himself said in Revelation 3:14, where he referred to himself as "the BEGINNING of the creation of God." So what the scriptures have shown us so far is that Jesus Christ was begotten of the Father before anything else existed, but we will allow the scriptures to further confirm that for us. In Proverbs 8, where we see the testimony of the person of wisdom, it says; "The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, BEFORE his works of old" (Prov. 8:22). The word possessed is correctly translated as "created," so again we see that the person of wisdom, which is Christ [I Cor. 1:30], was created by God before anything else was made. Moving on in Prov. 8, we are told, "I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning..." This phrase "set up" indicates someone being anointed, usually as a king; so once again we see that Christ was anointed to become a king from the beginning of all things, which beginning he himself IS (Jn. 1:1,2; Col. 1:18). In verses 24,25 in Prov. 8, we are told that this person of wisdom, which is the Son of God, was "brought forth" before the creation. And the term "brought forth" is used in reference to a child being born. Now let me point out that wisdom itself, as a faculty of God's being, was never created, anointed as a king, or brought forth as a birth. It has always existed in God, who has no beginning. There's no doubt that this is the testimony of the Son of God, which was concealed until God sent his Son to the earth. Neither is there any doubt that this passage of scripture in Proverbs 8 is where the apostles obtained knowledge about the origin of the Son of God, as being referenced in the new testament scriptures in this writing.

Now let's go back to Prov. 8, where the Son of God says in verse 27, "When he prepared the heavens, I was there." And this again shows that the Son was with the Father during the creation, as well as before. Then we have the clincher in verse 30, in which after describing a couple more aspects of the creation, the Son says; "Then I was BY him, as one BROUGHT UP with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him." So during the creation, Christ was "by" the Father, which explains Genesis 1:26 more clearly; where during the creation of the heavens and the earth, God says to someone: "Let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness." And the term "brought up with him" is translated to mean a "master workman," as an apprentice to God. And finally, "rejoicing always before him" is translated as "joyfully laughing and playing." So it is evident that these things do not refer to the faculty of God's wisdom, but rather to the personification of that wisdom; which is God's Son Jesus Christ, the Word of God. And this powerfully revealing excerpt from the Proverbs confirms new testament scripture about God's Son which tell us that "God created all things by Jesus Christ," and again speaking of the Son, it is said; "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him" (Eph. 3:9; Col. 1:16). And once more the new testament scriptures confirm what we have seen from the Proverbs: "Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, BY WHOM also he made the worlds" (Heb. 1:2). So in these things, the scriptures give us a little better ideal of when God said to his Son, "Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee" (Psm. 2:7). And so it is my friend, that we see that the very first "father's day" was before anything else ever existed, both in heaven and in earth. Once there was only a Son joyfully laughing and playing before a very delighted Father, and they both were very, very happy to be only with one another. I don't know about you, but I have to say that I am very, very happy that they let us in on the joy. And I am quite thankful that because of that first father's day long, long, ago; we too have a father's day ourselves. In fact I wouldn't have it any other way. Amen, and God bless.
