The Lord Is My Help

“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore” (Psm. 121). Wow! What a Psalm! Maybe it looks hum-drum to you, like “Yeah, I know all of that already.” Well, if you DO know all of that already, according to ongoing personal experience, then there is certainly NOTHING HUM-DRUM there my friend! All I can tell you is that this has been my testimony for thirty three years, and it absolutely, positively THRILLS ME to read this Psalm! Are you kidding me??!! To live in this broken down, busted up, perverse world of fear and more fear, and to have this testimony, is so far off the charts for goodness and joy that it just defies comprehension. I truly do not look anywhere else for my help except to Jesus, and because of that he helps me through more sources than I can count.

As far as God not sleeping, he has literally delivered me out of many life threatening circumstances IN DREAMS while I am asleep, simply by me crying out to him in my dream. I always wake up and escape the catastrophe that was coming upon me in the dream. How’s that for him never slumbering or sleeping? And forget the sun and the moon; he hasn’t let ANYTHING “smite me by day… or by night.” My God has surely “preserved me from all evil” in the midst of circumstances where it simply isn’t possible to be preserved from evil. Reminds me of another superb Psalm: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me” (Psm. 23:4). Oh yeah, when God’s “perfect love casts out [all] fear,” then comes to pass the saying of Jesus: “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you” (I Jn. 4:18; Lk. 10:19). Now that my friend, is being preserved from all evil, and that is a reality in my life because of the wondrous grace and power of the Lord Jesus Christ whom I have trusted fully these many years. When these things have truly been your testimony over time, as they have been for me, then you are fully confident that “The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.” When you make these things your testimony, and follow steadfastly after the same faith that inspired these writings; there is a multiplicity of power and joy in reading these things. No friend, there’s no hum-drum here. Amen.
