Judges of Scripture

It’s just amazing as to how many people have decided to make themselves judges of the scriptures, rather than letting the scriptures judge them. One man who is part of an affiliation that believes there is no literal devil or Hell, told me that he had come to the understanding that the story Jesus referenced in Luke 16:19-31, about the rich man and Lazarus the beggar was “just a parable.” Really? So then Jesus was a fictional story teller? So what else did Jesus say that was not really true? I see. Well, let’s move on then. A woman who came to my Bible study some years ago decided that the apostle Paul was “just in the flesh” when he said that he didn’t allow for women to teach or to be in authority, but to learn in silence (I Cor. 14:34-37; I Tim. 2:11-14). So how can we know when the main writer of the new testament books was “in the flesh,” and when he was in the Spirit? Uh huhhh. And then someone who doesn’t believe that the saints will stand before God at the great white throne judgmemt, merely said, “I know the scriptures say that………….” But nothing followed to confirm this school of thought that is contrary to plain evidence of the scriptures (Rom. 14:10-12; II Cor. 5:10; etc.).

Of course I can’t leave out all of the folks who are in affiliations that have secret knowledge of mysterious things that are SUPPOSEDLY in the scriptures, yet when I ask them to show me scriptural evidence of their vast understanding, they can only say that “it’s pretty deep,” or “it’s there alright;” but still can’t show me WHERE. I could go on with further examples, but time won’t allow, and I think the point has been sufficiently made. We should fear God my friend, and not add to or take away from the scriptures; because none of us are in a posItion to judge the inspired written record of how God’s word of truth came to the writers thereof. As Peter stated, “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost" (II Pet. 2:20,21). What we need to do is pray our way into the same frame of mind that the scriptures were written in, and allow that same holy Ghost to reveal the evident truth to us, so that we can make good sense and know what we’re talking about in regard to the Bible (Jn. 16:13; I Jn. 2:27).
