And God said, Let there be light: and there was light

"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day... And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day... And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good... And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day... And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day... So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth... And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day" (From Gen. 1).

Okay, so what's the point of copying these verses from the first chapter of Genesis about the creation? What does it prove? Well, let's start at the beginning, and the beginning will actually tell the remainder of the story. God created light. We see that. He then divided the light from the darkness, and he named the light as 'Day,' and he also named the darkness as 'Night.' The Bible was written for human beings living in this world, so it is written in a manner that is consistent with what human beings can identify with. The scriptures weren't written for some non-existent life form from some non-existent universe. The point is that we can readily identify with what is night, and with what is day. We know that there are hours of darkness which we associate with nighttime, and hours of light that we associate with daytime. Surely we have no conflict on these simplistic matters. Here is what I'm getting to: We know that God created the heavens and the earth in six days. We just read that in fact. That is clearly what the Bible says. The problem is that there are many believers, including prominent well known ministers, who believe that evolution exists in the account of the creation in Genesis. It most assuredly does not. Believing people who have ventured into that arena often use the theory that because the scripture says, "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day;" that the timetable of the creation could easily be other than what it first appears. HOGWASH!! One consideration in that mindset is that each 'day' of the creation stood for a thousand years. Well, the really BIG hole in that school of thought is exactly what I have already pointed out. We know that there is an evening and a morning in every complete day. We know that it is dark at nighttime, and that it is light in the daytime.

The account of the creation, much of which we have just read, clearly tells us that each full day of creation consisted of one nighttime and one daytime. If each day had consisted of a thousand years, then there would have been three hundred and sixty five thousand evenings and mornings in each of the 'days' of creation. The scriptures clearly declare that each 'day' of creation consisted of one nighttime and one daytime. This is how it is written with each and every completed day of the creation: "THE evening and THE morning were THE ___ DAY." God was not trying to trick anyone or test anyone with the way he moved the writers of the Bible to write. They wrote in terms that we as people can identify with, so that we as people could easily understand the things that God has had recorded in writing for our benefit. To put this in mathematical terms, one evening plus one morning equals one day. That is what is there, and it really is just that simple.To see it any other way, and to try to fit man's abomination of evolution into it, is just plain nonsensical across the board. A scripture that I often refer to comes readily to mind: "Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth" (Prov. 17:24). If we want to know what is true we should stick with focusing on what is right in front of us, rather than go somewhere far off to find some unfounded mystery. One more verse should complete the thought: "A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is EASY unto him that understandeth" (Prov. 14:6). I'm sure that none of us are interested in qualifying as a scorner, so let's keep it easy so we can understand. Amen.
