What Is Truth?

Has the Lord Jesus Christ ever answered a prayer for you? Has he ever delivered you from anything that could not be done otherwise? Has he ever healed your body in any way? Has he ever made anything about himself known to you in any way? If the answer to any of the above is yes, then that settles it all. All of what? All of everything that we can read in the Bible about the wondrous works of God. If any of it is real and true, then all of it is real and true. Period. So then, it all comes down to one simplistic element - our faith. Like the old and powerful Gospel song says, “Only believe, only believe; all things are possible, only believe.” Amen! Of course this song comes from the biblical incident where Jesus raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead. As he was returning with Jairus to his home to pray for his sick daughter, one came from the home and notified them that the girl had died. Can you imagine how Jairus must have felt? I hope that you cannot. But Jesus just looked at Jairus and spoke these simplistically powerful words which are now and forever famous among those who believe: “Be not afraid, only believe" (Mk. 5:35,36). When they went to the house they found many mourning, but Jesus told all of them that the girl was not dead, but only sleeping. Those at the house then laughed Jesus to scorn, because in fact the girl was dead! Scientific and natural fact pronounced her dead, but Jesus still said that she was not dead! So which was true? Well, Jesus went in and raised the girl from the dead, so it looks like his word was the truth, regardless of what natural fact dictated (Mk. 5:37-42).

The word of God supersedes all things at all times, under all circumstances. And there are a lot of things all around us and in our lives, that dictate one thing, when established truth of God dictates something else. We need to believe what God deems to be true, rather than just giving in to natural fact, and the way things often seem like they just have to be. Maybe we or someone close to us has been given a dismal health report, and natural fact dictates that it’s just going to be that way. But Isaiah 53:5 says that "with his stripes we are healed.” Peter clarified that that statement of truth from the holy Ghost is still absolutely in effect, and in fact he even put it more affirmatively, saying, “by whose stripes ye were healed" (I Pet. 2:24). Either that word is true, or nothing is true. And in fact it is all true! God is not a wishy-washy God, and he’s not trying to trick anyone. He has fully established that all power is his, and that he is more than willing to use all of that power for my good and yours. That is the very thing that the children of Israel forgot after he delivered them from bondage in Egypt with great signs and wonders (Psm. 78:10-16). The great apostle Paul admonished us to not repeat the same example of unbelief that was demonstrated by the children of Israel (Heb. 4:11). So friend, if God has ever done anything for you, he is willing to do whatever is needed for you now. Only don’t hold to sin, and he will do great things for you, as he has established that he wants to do, and as he has already done (Psm. 66:18; I Jn. 3:20-23). In the end it all comes down to one simplistic element: "All things are possible, only believe! Amen!
