Going Forward or Backward?

Raphael-inspired oil painting of a modern man in a blue overshirt, ivory T-shirt and ochre trousers stepping from a shadowed stone arcade toward a sunlit olive-lined path, with one hand at his heart and a crimson backpack; a ceremonial cloth rests behind him as a golden horizon opens over distant hills and water.

Just a couple of notes on the past two posts about the non-inclusion of natural ordinances under the new covenant. The apostle Paul stated very clearly to the Galatians, who had been duped by errant Jewish believers to observe the ceremonies of the law, that they were going backwards from the leading of the Spirit of God: “But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law” (Gal. 5:18). It is very simple really: If we attribute godly regard to symbolic ordinances that only pointed to what Jesus was going to accomplish spiritually for us, we are going [backward] from what he died and rose to provide. That would be the indwelling of his Spirit, which in fact IS the fulfillment of ALL of the law’s ceremonial ordinances, including water baptism and what is called communion; which really is only a broken off fragment of the Passover (Rom. 8:4; Mat. 3:15; Mat. 26:26-29). We just can’t mix the old covenant with the new covenant, without polluting, diluting, and nullifying the purifying and empowering effect of the holy Ghost, which itself IS the new covenant (Heb. 10:15,16; II Cor. 3:3). The apostle Paul explained that reality to Peter upon rebuking him for his divisive example to the Gentile believers, influencing them that they should be under the law also: “If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? … Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ… I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain” (Gal. 2:14,16,21). So according to the apostle Paul, if we are made to believe that we are made right with God by the carnal ordinances of the law in addition to faith in Jesus that results in the baptism of the Spirit, we are in effect saying that Jesus came here and died in vain (Mk. 1:7,8; Acts 1:4,5; Jn. 7:38,39; I Cor. 6:11).

The observance and regard for natural ordinances puts us in a backward direction from the leading of God’s Spirit, because the only thing that the Spirit leads into is true holiness through the purifying power of the Spirit, resulting in the perfection of God’s love in our hearts (I Pet. 1:22). That is the meaning of Paul’s words to the Philippians, which we started this three part post with a few days ago, where he said that “we worship God in spirit… and have no confidence in the flesh” (Philip. 3:3). This is exactly why the apostle Paul made the following statements directly after telling the Galatians that they could not be led by the Spirit and be under the ceremonial ordinances of the law at the same time, as the opening scripture of this article shows: “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law” (Gal. 5:19-23). The “works of the flesh” are the only place we can end up if we go backward from the Spirit, and the “fruit of the Spirit” is what we will produce if we go forward with the leading of the Spirit. And the point of all this? Well, just that the former hinders us as the apostle stated, and the latter saves the soul. I believe this is a matter worthy of our attention, seeing that God’s people have universally been duped into this old covenant mindset, and consequently have been made to believe that sin is something that we all have to put up with. The truth is we cannot be saved if we do not get rid of sin from our lives literally, so going backward from the holy Ghost is not a good direction to that objective (Rom. 6:23; Heb. 12:14). Amen.

In loving memory

Lary R. Hale

A devoted husband and father, a faithful friend, and a minister who spent his life pointing people toward Jesus.

“To live is Christ, and to die is gain”

Philippians 1:21

A life given to love

Lary Redman Hale was born on November 13, 1954, to Marvin and Norma Hale. The youngest in the family, he had a special closeness with his mother. Her tenderness found an echo in the way he grew into a man who could feel deeply, speak openly, and comfort others without embarrassment. He admired the strength and industry of his brother Gary and the generous hearts of his sisters Vicki and Mila.

A boy with a wide world

He grew up among cousins and school friends whose company stayed precious to him. He could still light up telling stories of bicycles, BB guns, small adventures with his dog Peanuts, and days on his parents’ houseboat. His father, a Marine veteran, cared for the boat and dock, and Lary helped him. As the years went on, father and son found another ritual together in weekend boxing matches. Reconnecting with old friends at his fiftieth class reunion brought Lary the same easy laughter he remembered from boyhood.

Swimming came so naturally to him that he preferred to think of himself as part dolphin. He loved cars, weight training, and the ocean. As a young man managing a health club, he took real pleasure in helping others become healthier. He was drawn to the outdoors and learned to photograph the beauty he found there. He enjoyed language, too: he collected words, sharpened his writing, and never lost his delight in learning. Even when his health limited his exercise later in life, he kept doing what he could. He still hoped to return to the white sand and water of Destin, Florida.

The change that shaped everything

In his youth, outward confidence did not bring Lary peace. He had the hair, clothes, cars, and physical strength that attracted attention, but privately he was searching for something deeper. He briefly considered college paths in marine biology and philosophy. Neither answered what was troubling his heart.

A young woman he admired, Fay Kustes, attended a small church where people spoke of their lives being changed by God’s Spirit. Curiosity drew Lary there. After months of attending, he knelt and prayed honestly about habits he could not overcome on his own. He later described waking the next morning with an unexpected sense of freedom. He understood that experience as God delivering him, and he devoted the rest of his life to telling others what Jesus had done for him.

Fay became his wife of thirty years. Together they raised Benjamin Isaac and Elisha Daniel. Lary loved sharing what he was discovering in Scripture with them, but he wanted them to know more than religious ideas. He taught them to seek God as someone present and able to help in ordinary life. The home they built, and the love he gave his sons, meant more to him than any public recognition.

A ministry formed out of the labor of love

Lary wanted to reach people who felt lost or overlooked. He preached and taught throughout Louisville and southern Indiana, welcomed by churches of different generations and backgrounds. His energetic preaching found a particularly warm home among African American Baptist and Pentecostal congregations in the area.

He also made the tools he needed to carry his message farther. Over more than thirty years of radio and television ministry, he produced well over a thousand gospel programs. He recorded, mixed, edited, and prepared them himself, working in an analog era and often without a budget. When the internet opened a new way to reach people, he put his writing and teaching online. Later, through social media, he spent evenings answering questions, praying with people, and encouraging believers in other countries. Some came to regard him as a fatherly presence, even though they had never stood in the same room.

What he called success

For all the broadcasts, sermons, printed writing, and lives reached across the world, Lary measured his life by something closer to home. In his last week, reflecting with his family, he spoke with gratitude about Benjamin and Elisha. Their love, humility, and personal faith mattered to him more than their accomplishments. He credited Jesus for the men they had become.

His sons remember a father who stayed beside them, guided without trying to control, and was quick to apologize and forgive. When they stumbled, he urged them to “get up and go from here.” The tenderness that began in his own childhood became something he passed on. His family, friends, and the people who called him pastor or teacher continue to carry that love.

Lary died on April 21, 2024. His wife Fay; his sons Benjamin and Elisha, along with Elisha’s wife Katrine; his brother Gary; his sister Vicki and her husband Dan; and many relatives, friends, and fellow believers remember him with love. In the hope he spent his life preaching, his family looks toward reunion with him in the presence of Jesus.
